BARLEYSHAKES
Brewed in Ireland and distilled in Australia, the Barleyshakes are a Celtic band with worldly influences, combining intense energy, beautiful harmony and driving dance rhythms in their live performances.
Queensland Music Award winners in the World Music category, the Barleyshakes are loved for their blend of traditional and original material, and their uplifting and joyous approach to live performance. The Shakes skilfully blend their “bent” Irish sound with many other styles in their fast-paced songs and instrumentals.
Using fiddles, banjo, flutes, bass, drums, guitar, mandolin, and vocals, the Shakes are a collaboration of Irish and Australian performers.
Vocalist and guitarist Alan Kelly is from Dublin and sings traditional and original songs in the Irish language, as well as English. Alan has recorded as a bodhran soloist for the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.
Fiddler Kristin Kelly has an intriguing musical story, she was a highly respected strings teacher on the Atherton Tablelands and on the Sunshine Coast. Before joining the Shakes in 1997, Kristin was a member of Patterson’s Curse Bush Band before teaming up with members of the Czech Velvet Revolution to form Prague based band Puca Rua.
Flautist Belinda Tucker won the Declan Affey Award for best young folk musician of the year at the National Folk Festival, Canberra. Belinda runs the music program at Mount Maria
Veteran instrumentalist Steve Cook is hugely respected throughout Australia for his work with acoustic Irish band Tulca Mor. With the Shakes he plucks a mean dizzy banjo.
The younger members, are the Kelly’s offspring, and they effortlessly infuse present day influences to the group eclectic sound. Mocara Kelly at 23 is a fine fiddler and her vocal harmonies add a sublime quality to the songs. Rory Kelly adds saxophones, bodhran, and vocals to the Shakes. Rory is a consummate performer and he loves to blend modern drum grooves with traditional tunes. His jazz style saxophone melodies take the songs to a new and exciting horizons.
Completing the line up on bass is American Bassist Joe Morris, who background in Ska, and Reggae gives the Shakes a contemporary dance edge.
“Any event looking for great musicians with talent, a solid traditional foundation and tasteful experimental leanings should look no further than the Barleyshakes. Combining great musicianship, thoughtful social comment and an impressive stage presence the Barleyshakes are more than capable of raising whatever roof has the good fortune to be sheltering them.” Woodford Folk Festival.

THE MOONSETS
Electric Harp, Bass and Drums trio The Moonsets deliver an eclectic, psychedelic blend of folk, world and quirky funk.
Combining Electric Harp, Bass, drums and soulful vocals to create an eclectic blend of psychedelic folk laced with soul, funk, world, blues and a splash of subtropical groove. It’s difficult to pin these musical adventurers down to one genre so be prepared to have any preconceptions blown in the best possible way.
Kayt Wallace artfully bends the organic tones of her 36-string electric Harp with guitar effects and a playing style that’s all her own. Her smoky vocals sweep from whispers to soulful roars layered with the harmonies, rich grooves and the playful rhythms of Andrea Joy Norden on drums and songwriting partner Stephan Beattie on bass / guitar.
Over the years the trio have had the pleasure to share their unique sounds at Woodford Folk Festival, Palm Creek, Mitchell Creek Rock n Blues, Wallaby Creek, Australian Body Art, Rush, Island Vibe, Kuranda Roots, Folk Rhythm and Life, Earth Frequency and MONA and have been acknowledged with highly commended 4 times in the Blues & Roots, Folk and World categories of the QLD Music Awards.
The Moonsets independently produce and record on 100% solar power in their old wooden shack on the northern edges of the Sunshine Coast.
